Eir’s budget brand, GoMo, is launching a cut-price fibre broadband service with no contract in an attempt to undercut the market in the same way that its mobile service did in 2019.

The Eir-owned service is promising a €30-per-month fibre broadband line “for life” for the first 10,000 orders made by current GoMo mobile subscribers.

The GoMo broadband service will be charged in a similar way to its mobile service, making it the only fixed-line broadband service not to require an initial lengthy contract.

However, the company has said it will also charge a €50 activation fee – making it more expensive than rival operator Sky for those who stay with the service for a year.

Eir says that the 500Mbs service will also be limited to those in its own “Eir fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) footprint”, which covers 1.5 million premises across the country.

It means that the service will not be available to those in rural areas served by the National Broadband Plan, as that is a different fibre network.

Asked about installation, the company said: “Dependent on the specific home, if they are not already on the FTTH network then an engineer will install at no extra cost. If they are already on the FTTH network, it’s a simple self-install.”

Eir declined to say what the standard pricing of the GoMo service would be when the promotional price period ends.

Eir’s full pricing currently costs €76 per month plus an extra €4 per month each April, making it the most expensive headline service in the country.

An analysis by the Irish Independent of standard fibre broadband pricing in Ireland found that Sky has the cheapest 500Mbs package, charging €30 per month, the equivalent of €360 for the year. By comparison, GoMo’s promotional pricing will cost €410 for the first year.

However, Sky’s service price doubles after the end of the 12-month contract to €64 per month.

For those consumers willing to commit to a two-year contract, Virgin and Sky now cost the same for a 500Mbs deal, at €35 per month for 24 months, or €840 for the contract period. This compares to €770 for GoMo’s service.

“When we launched GoMo mobile, we set out to challenge traditional pricing models in Ireland,” said Caroline Lynch, Eir’s head of branding.

“With GoMo fibre broadband, we’re applying that same thinking.”
