I speak to Navan-born writer and comedian Gráinne Maguire on a Thursday, which constitutes a rare moment of downtime in her working week. As a writer on Saturday Night Live UK (SNL UK), she has just come through the three-hour table read of sketches the day before – always a hairy moment in the show’s production cycle.

Friday is also a crunch day if you’re in the business of topical joke writing. Maguire works on Weekend Update, an iconic and well-loved segment in the US version of the show that skewers whatever is going on in the news cycle.
