Britain’s Got Talent viewers were unimpressed as puppets from Avenue Q took to the stage during the latest live show.

Saturday night’s (May 9) semi-final of the ITV favourite opened with a performance from some of the characters in the musical, who sang for judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and KSI and the audience of the TV show.

The audience appeared to be charmed by the puppets, but viewers watching at home were not so sure. Several posted messages on X, which was formerly Twitter, commenting on it, with one asking: “Just turned BGT on… WTF are we watching?”

“What a strange start to the show!” agreed someone else. Another person stormed: “What’s this opening act? What are we watching… the worst ventriloquist act ever? So dull and boring and just a waste of a slot.”

“What the hell was that opener?” asked another viewer.

However, others loved the peek at the long-running comedy musical.

“Loving this puppet stuff,” one person wrote on the platform. “It will be the best talent on the show tonight.”

Another noted: “Avenue Q opening the show is a BOLD choice for 2026! It’s been 20 years since they hit the West End and they’re still more entertaining than half the human acts we see. Simon’s face says it all!”

So far, four acts have made it through to the final of Britain’s Got Talent, which is hosted by presenters Ant and Dec. Singer Matty Juniosa went through after being awarded a golden buzzer by Amanda, and Anastasiia and her dog, Salsa, won the public vote after an impressive dance routine that charmed the panel and viewers watching at home.

In the second semi-final, Alesha was picked to be the judge with control of the golden buzzer and she pushed it for dance act LMA.

Magician Fabian Fox was then voted into the final of the competition by the public.

KSI was given the power of the golden buzzer for the third semi-final, meaning he has the power to send one act straight into the last stage, where they have the chance to compete for £250,000 and a spot at the Royal Variety Performance.

Britain’s Got Talent airs Saturdays at 7pm on ITV and ITVX.
