On the first day of Jonathan Creswell’s trial for the rape and murder of showjumper Katie Simpson, the young woman’s grieving family were front and centre. There would be no second day in court. Creswell would die by suicide following the first day of his 2024 trial at the Crown Court in Derry.

“I was there on day one of the trial. He obviously knew there was no way out. The court case would have given us something, it would have given us the truth,” Colleen McConville, Katie’s aunt, told the Sunday Independent.
