The pilot of a light aircraft walked away without serious injury after a crash in Co Down on Sunday.

An ambulance and fire crew were sent to the scene of the crash after the aircraft went down in a field off the Saintfield Road near Ballynahinch.

Police said the crash was reported around 2.50pm.

Images from the scene show the aircraft appears to be a P51 Mustang, a long range United States-made fighter well known during WWII.

However, Andy Glenfield, who manages The Second World War in Northern Ireland social media page, said the craft is a replica. It is a three quarter length replica made by Titan, Mr Glenfield said.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) said a number of resources were deployed to the incident.

After the pilot was spoken to at the scene, it was found to be not necessary to take the individual to hospital, the NIAS said.

The PSNI added that “one person was on board and, at this time” and “there are no reports of any serious injuries”.

“Air Accident Investigations Branch has been informed of the incident,” a spokesperson said.
