EastEnders’ Mark Fowler fears for his life next week when he’s abducted by gangsters and held to ransom! Grant Mitchell leads a risky mission to rescue his son, but what will Mark’s tormentors demand in return?

“It’s obvious Mark is more of a Mitchell than a Fowler these days,” says our EastEnders insider. “Just like his dad, he can’t resist playing the hard man – only Mark is in way over his head with this gang and wishes he’d never got mixed up with them…”

Still in debt to horrible heavies, Mark plans to make a quick buck by selling more dodgy vintage motors through the car lot. When Max hears that a load of classic vehicles have been found dumped and torched, he asks Lauren if Mark is connected.

Mark pleads his innocence, and thanks to a false alibi from Sam, Lauren buys his story. Keen to secure an expensive specialist nursery place for Jimmy, cash-strapped Lauren then asks Mark to flog more cars, as long as they’re discreet…

Suspicious Max asks Jack to investigate Mark, but when the copper finds some dirt, he urges his brother to let the authorities handle it.

Meanwhile, Mark gets a demand from the gang for their dosh. Rejecting his dad’s offer of help, Mark considers stealing from the car lot safe, but can’t bring himself to betray Lauren – then disaster strikes.

“Mark dashes out of the car lot, absentmindedly dropping his keys, when he’s bundled into a van by a group of masked men!” reveals our source. “It looks as though the deadline has passed for payback…”

The next day, Vicki asks the Mitchells if they’ve heard from Mark, who’s been missing all night. Confirmation he’s in danger comes when Grant gets a call from gangster boss Russell, who insists he gets his debt paid in full – or Mark is toast.

The situation gets stickier when it transpires that Russell also has past beef with Sam, adding to his agenda of vengeance against the Mitchell clan. The timing of Russell’s threats isn’t ideal, as it’s the day of Nigel’s funeral. But Grant refuses to abandon his son in his hour of need, so him, Phil, Sam and Billy head off to confront Russell.

There’s a tense standoff when they come face to face with Russell. Can they save Mark, or are they too late?

Once Mark’s fate is revealed, the Mitchells race to the church to say their last goodbye to Nigel. Back on the Square, Lauren secures her stake in the car lot, having hit her sales target.

But Max is like a dog with a bone and is sure Mark supplied his daughter with stolen cars. His suspicions grow when he finds Mark’s keys in the office – how can Max uncover the scam without getting Lauren in trouble with the law?

Mark made an appearance in the New Year’s Day flashforward episode at the start of this year, where he was just credited as ‘Man’, confirming that he’ll be around until at least early 2027. The then-mystery character was later revealed to be Mark Fowler, with Stephen Aaron-Sipple taking on the role.

EastEnders airs on Mondays – Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
