Viridor has proposed shutting down its chemical recycling operations in Northern Europe. The British waste management company argues that weak demand, regulatory uncertainty and competition from low-cost virgin plastics have rendered advanced plastics recycling “commercially uninvestable without policy changes”.

The group said on 12 May that it intends to cease operations at its Quantafuel plastics-to-liquids (Ptl) pyrolysis facility in Skive, Denmark, as well as related activities in Malmö, Sweden, and Oslo, Norway, subject to local consultation and negotiation processes. Malmö hosts laboratory and pilot-scale testing activities supporting the wider Quantafuel network, while Oslo houses central engineering, project management and other group functions….
