A motorist narrowly escaped serious injury when a tree fell on the bonnet of her car while she was driving in Dundalk, Louth, on Wednesday evening.
The incident happened around 6.45 pm when a tree in the grounds of St Mary’s College fell across St Mary’s Road.
Emergency services, including an ambulance crew, gardai and Louth County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service attended and the woman was treated at the scene.
The woman had a lucky escape, according to an eye witness, as the bonnet of the car was extensively damaged so she escaped serious injury by a matter of inches.
The busy road, which links the Inner Relief Road with the town centre, was closed for a time before the tree was removed.
There were strong gusts of wind throughout the day which poses a danger in the summer time when when trees are in full leaf.
