Rory McIlroy did not even try to hide his disappointment after suffering ‘rough’ justice and finishing with four bogeys in a row to open with a title-damaging 74 in the 108th US PGA Championship at Aronimink.

Asked to describe his four-over-par opening round, he wasted little energy. “Shit,” he said glumly.
