Roughly one year after breaking ground, the expansion of The Broad officially hit its topping-out milestone yesterday as the project’s final steel beam was hoisted into place in Downtown Los Angeles.
Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and built by MATT Construction — the same team behind the original museum — the 50,000-square-foot addition is on track to open in 2028, just ahead of the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games.

Before the beam was lifted, museum leaders and civic figures gathered to sign it in a ceremony that felt equal parts construction ritual and LA cultural event.

The project will expand the museum’s gallery space by roughly 70 percent, a response to both the institution’s lasting popularity and the rapid growth of its collection since opening in 2015.

Beyond more room for art, the addition promises a few architecturally intriguing moments: Visitors will be able to wander through visible painting storage racks, new outdoor courtyards will puncture the building with open-air spaces, and a dedicated event venue will support the museum’s public programming.
Lamar Johnson Collaborative is serving as the Executive Architect on the project.
