The DPP has directed that a pensioner accused of benefits fraud allegedly totaling €73,008.40 has her case tried in the circuit court.

Rose King (68), Tobar Blinne, Killeavy, Newry, was remanded on continuing bail to June 10 at Dundalk District Court.

No formal plea was entered. Her solicitor Frank McDonnell said that he had been served with 599 pages of disclosure and wanted an opportunity to read it.

There are eight charges all allegedly committed at the Department of Social Welffare Offices in Dundalk.

Ms King is accused of, on dates unknown between March 12, 2019, and January 9, 2024, stealing €52,782 Jobseekers Allowance; and on dates between June 1, 2017, and June 18, 2018, stealing €12,996.70 Carers’ Allowance and Respite Payment.

The defendant is further charged with stealing €7,283.70 Carers’ Allowance back payment on dates between April 25, 2017, and June 18, 2018.

She is also accused of inducement to accept a dishonest application for Carers’ Allowance and for Jobseekers’ Allowance and two counts of a similar charge in respect of a Means Test Review for Carers’ Allowance and for Jobseekers’ Benefit.

Ms King is charged with, on January 10, 2024, inducement to accept a dishonest application for a non-contributory State pension with intent to make gain.
