Sumter County Gallery of Art invites the community to experience a vibrant season of artistic expression through two featured exhibitions, Abstract Impressions and Clouds of Color, while also honoring the remarkable legacy of longtime arts leader Karen Watson during a special recognition event on Tuesday, May 26.
The exhibitions, currently on view at the gallery, celebrate the power of imagination, movement, texture and color through diverse artistic perspectives. Abstract Impressions explores emotion, interpretation and storytelling through abstract forms and layered visual experiences, while Clouds of Color offers visitors a luminous and immersive journey through expressive palettes and atmospheric works that inspire reflection and wonder.
Together, these exhibitions highlight the gallery’s continued commitment to presenting meaningful and accessible visual arts experiences that connect artists and audiences across the region.
As the gallery celebrates artistic innovation and community engagement, it will also take time to recognize a leader whose vision helped shape the organization into the cultural cornerstone it is today.
On Tuesday, May 26, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., the Sumter County Gallery of Art will host a special recognition honoring Karen Watson for her 21 years of dedicated service to Sumter County and the surrounding region. During the gathering, Watson will be formally recognized as a recipient of South Carolina’s prestigious Order of the Silver Crescent for her transformative contributions to the arts and her enduring commitment to community enrichment.
Under Watson’s leadership, the gallery flourished as a vibrant hub for artistic expression, education and accessibility – expanding opportunities for artists, students, families and visitors throughout the community.
“Karen Watson’s legacy can be seen not only in the exhibitions and programs developed during her tenure, but also in the countless lives touched through the arts,” said Dr. La Ruchala Murphy, executive director of the Sumter County Gallery of Art. “As we celebrate these inspiring exhibitions, we are also celebrating the foundation Karen helped build rooted in creativity, access and community connection.”
The May 26 recognition will include brief remarks, a formal presentation and an opportunity for guests, community leaders, supporters and advocates of the arts to gather in celebration of Watson’s extraordinary impact.
