Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Embattled Summer Spellman might have a crucial lifeline on Coronation Street next week, as the hunt to identify Theo Silverton’s killer continues. The character is set to be taken in for questioning over the murder, but might there be hope on the horizon?

The character, played by Harriet Bibby, has emerged as something of a prime suspect in the whodunnit mystery, and this week fans have seen her find out that she’s been offered a place at an American university.

Leaving the country might not be so easy, however, as she faces rising suspicion over abusive Theo’s death – not least from George Shuttleworth, who finds a journal in which she writes about wanting to put a gun to Theo’s head.

But in scenes set to air next Friday, 22 May, Summer will be seen remembering a crucial witness who could back up her alibi. Will they be able to prove her innocence and exonerate her? And if they do, will she then be able to flee the cobbles and return to the US to continue her studies?

Elsewhere, a guilty George will confess to Todd that he told Lisa about Summer, and potentially implicated her in Theo’s demise. How will Todd react?

Speaking of Summer’s rough ordeal, Bibby said: “Sitting in a police station being questioned over someone’s murder is horrific. Summer’s in panic mode. Everyone who was linked to Theo is just trying to keep their head above water and stay out of suspicion’s way.”

The character isn’t without motive, though, as Bibby well knows. “Theo stole Billy away from Summer,” she said. “He’s also taken a part of Todd, because he’s not the same guy as he once was. It boils down to the question: would Summer kill to protect what’s left of her family?”

Coronation Street has confirmed that Theo’s killer will finally be revealed over the summer, with producer Kate Brooks telling Digital Spy: “We reveal to the audience who it is during late June/early July. There’s lots of people who you’ll definitely think it could be.

“It’s a massive story with so many different twists and different offshoots. You’ll think you’re watching one thing, and then it diverts into a completely new story territory. It’ll definitely keep people guessing!”

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
