TAMPA, Fla. — Tariffs could soon lead to higher prices for your medications.

Last month, President Donald Trump imposed 100% tariffs on patented pharmaceutical products, along with ingredients used in some of those medications.

Now, local pharmacies are starting to see increased costs.

Like many people, Tony Jannu got into the world of medicine to help people.

“We work predominately with assisted living facilities, mental health communities,” he said.

He is the CEO and director of Pharmacy for Butterfly Pharmacy, a business he opened in 2009.

For nearly 20 years, he has stayed afloat in an ever-changing economy and has expanded his office to serve communities across the state of Florida.

But today, he says tariffs are affecting his bottom line. “We are serving the patients at very, very slim margins, sometimes negative reimbursements,” Jannu said.

He says ADHD medication and GLP-1 are seeing the biggest increases because their ingredients are made in foreign countries.

And that’s affecting availability, too.

“Then we are having to make do with giving them alternative medications, but sometimes the alternatives are not much cheaper,” he said.

USF Assistant Professor of Supply Chain Management Seckin Ozkul, says mom-and-pop pharmacies are feeling the effect much more than bigger chains.

“They already have smaller margins of profit. They’re going to be squeezed there,” Ozkul said. “And some inventory issues can be seen because the pharmacies with larger buying power will get more inventory than the smaller ones.”

He says those tariffs could also force pharmacies to diversify where they purchase their inventory.

Jannu says it’s not just the medication that’s being affected. Itt’s also the packaging they use, too.

“The price of the roll went up by at least 30%, the Viles, it went up, and these are the things nobody talks about. But they are directly impacted by the tariffs,” he says.

Jannu said he is staying positive that there will be a solution soon.

“Independent pharmacies are not able to survive, so now we are working with thinner margins, but we believe everything comes around,” he said.

It’s a price he must pay to keep his doors open and to continue serving the community.

A fact sheet from the White House said this is an effort by Trump to protect national security and strengthen manufacturing across all sectors.
