A man has died after being attacked by a shark at Long Reef Beach in Australia.

Police in Sydney said the victim was pulled from the water by other surfers but had sustained catastrophic injuries.

He has been identified as Mercury Psillakis, a father of one, in his 50s.

The species of shark responsible has not yet been confirmed.

Authorities have closed nearby beaches as a precaution.
