A fundraiser has been launched for a mother and daughter who “lost everything” in a recent fire at a Castleknock apartment building.
They were among the many residents impacted by the fire, losing all of their belongings, clothes and memories, and they now face the “difficult task of starting again from scratch.” Jalna Swain is raising money for her sister and niece for emergency items and accommodation and help towards rebuilding their lives.
Dublin Fire Brigade confirmed that they were called to the scene after midnight on Thursday night, with four fire engines attending the blaze on Auburn Avenue. Residents were evacuated, and were treated with breathing apparatus cylinders and blankets.
They were later brought to emergency accommodation due to the fire.
“My sister and her daughter, along with the other residents, had to leave the building with almost nothing” said Jalna via the fundraiser. “They escaped in just the pyjamas they were wearing at the time.”
“In a matter of moments, she lost her home, her belongings, her clothes, and many of the everyday things most of us take for granted. She is now facing the incredibly difficult task of starting again from scratch. We are raising funds to help her with the immediate and practical costs that come after something like this.”

The fundraiser will contribute towards the costs of temporary accommodation and living costs, emergency clothing and essentials, toiletries and personal items and replacing basic household items
“Anyone who knows my sister will know that she would never expect people to help, but this is one of those moments where family, friends, neighbours and the wider community can make a real difference,” she added, with the GoFundMe goal set at €2000.
“Any donation, no matter how small, will help her and her daughter take the first steps towards getting back on their feet. If you are not able to donate, sharing this page would also mean a great deal.”

A Garda spokesperson told Dublin Live at the time: “Gardaí and emergency services are at the scene of fire at a residential property in Blanchardstown, Co. Dublin today, today Friday 22 May 2026. Local diversions are in place”
