MANSFIELD — Longtime football coach Lee Owens and Richland Source Managing Editor Larry Phillips join the News Man Weekly crew this week to talk about their new book, “The Spirit of A Team.”
It’s episode No. 63 of the weekly chatfest.
A Madison graduate and former Ohio State assistant coach, Owens teamed with Phillips to author a new book on team building, featuring insights from CEOs and successful coaches on their strategies for achieving success.
The Spirit of a team can be ordered at Amazon.com in hardback or paperback.
Owens retired as head coach at Ashland University and was also the head coach at the University of Akron.
“The Spirit of a Team” chronicles Owens’ experiences and philosophies on team building.
A profile of Carl Johnson, now a successful businessman, includes a recounting of his leading the 1985 Galion Tigers to the state championship. To this day, it remains the only football state championship won by a north central Ohio team in the playoff era.
The book has chapters on coaches like Green Bay’s Matt LaFleur, Wisconsin’s Luke Fickell, Larry Kehres of Mount Union and Sue Ramsey of Ashland University.
It also features stories about players Owens coached, including Eddie George, Orlando Pace, Korey Stringer, Jason Taylor and Charlie Frye.
In addition, there are short biographies of businessmen like billionaire Dwight Schar and Ohio’s Matt Kaulig, Dan Niss, and Johnson, all of whom Owens connected with while coaching.
The book is available now at Amazon.com in paperback and hardback.
The News Man Weekly team of Carl Hunnell, Zac Hiser and Hayden Gray also discusses the history and meaning of Labor Day, celebrated around north central Ohio, the state and the country on Monday.
