St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office responds to two separate mental health crises

  • May 31, 2026

St. Croix County, Wis. (WEAU) – The St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office shared that it responded to two mental health crises on the St. Croix River Crossing last week. The department is using this to remind others of mental health resources.

According to a Facebook post from the sheriff’s office, on Thursday, May 21, crews were called about a person who appeared to be in crisis outside the railing of the bridge. While responding to the scene, the person jumped into the river.

Law enforcement was notified shortly after of another person who appeared to be in distress on the bridge. Deputies from the sheriff’s office, along with several other law enforcement agencies, worked to provide assistance to the person. After nearly one hour, the person chose to come off the bridge.

The St. Croix County Sheriff said the two situations had different outcomes. The person who jumped from the bridge passed away. The other person was able to be given information about resources available to them.

“Sometimes a conversation, a connection, or simply having someone willing to stay with you can make all the difference,” St. Croix County Sheriff Scott Knudson wrote in the Facebook post.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, there are resources available, including dialing the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
