Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council have issued a warning to sea swimmers to stay away from one popular spot for their own safety – as it remains a “construction site”.

The Vico Baths at Hawk Cliff in Dalkey are still closed to the public until at least the end of June due to ongoing construction works. But despite this, swimmers have been either removing or climbing over fencing to access the beauty spot.

This, DLR say, poses a “serious safety risk” – and they are urging swimmers to stay away until the works are complete. They said: “Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is reminding the public that Hawks Cliff (Vico Baths) remains closed until the end of June 2026. The site is currently an active construction area.

“For safety reasons, members of the public are asked not to remove or climb over the fencing and barriers in place. Despite this, people continue to access the site to swim. This poses a serious safety risk and may delay completion of the project.

“We ask all visitors to respect the fencing, barriers and safety signage in place. These improvements will enhance the existing facilities and help protect the area for future use.”

DLR offered a number of alternative nearby swimming locations, including Killiney beach, Sandycove, and Seapoint. In addition, access to the Éire sign grass area adjacent to the Baths remains open.

The works at the Baths include:

  • Repairs to concrete access steps
  • Replacement of damaged railings
  • Installation of new swim ladders
