Google may have just leaked an unreleased product in the most incredible way.
A scuba diver has reportedly discovered what is purported to be the unreleased Google Pixel Watch 5 off the coast of Saint Martin, making for one of the most unusual hardware leaks since an iPhone 4 prototype was found in a bar.
At first glance, the smartwatch appears nearly identical to the current Pixel Watch 4. However, markings on the back of the device reportedly identify it as a “Pixel Watch 5”, suggesting it could be an unreleased prototype or pre-production unit.
Unfortunately, the device’s battery was depleted, preventing a full examination. The smartwatch could only display the time and could not be powered on for further testing.
The Pixel Watch 5 is expected to be unveiled later this year alongside Google’s next-generation Pixel hardware lineup. Rumours suggest Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon Wear Elite platform could power the smartwatch.
While accidental leaks have become commonplace in the tech industry, finding an unreleased smartwatch in the ocean is a new one. Whether it fell overboard during testing or arrived there through some other mishap remains a mystery. One thing is certain, though: even the ocean can’t keep Google’s next Pixel device under wraps.
