Warning this article contains major spoilers about Traitors Ireland

Last night, RTÉ broadcast one of the most dramatic hours on Irish TV in a very long time, as garda Eamon and retired guard Paudie went for each other on Traitors Ireland.

After plots, counterplots and an explosive roundtable, Eamon was voted off the show as the Faithful finally banished a traitor.

Paudie has been on the ropes for a few episodes thanks to some  strange comments he made. However, he’s been clever and likeable in trying to win back the trust of the other contestants, if a bit out of his depth. The odds were against him last night, but Paudie had the whole country behind him.

Eamon meanwhile played the traitor role with insufferable malice. He looked in the mirror and saw a devious Machivellean plotter but when his little schemes blew up in his face at the roundtable, he had no explanation.

The roundtable felt like a huge comeuppance and his banishment united the nation like few votes have.

Eamon appeared on Traitors Uncloaked after the programme on Monday to explain his tactics and made a heap of disappointing comments about Paudie that reeked of sour grapes.

“I played the Traitors on ultra-difficult mode because I was saddled with – without a doubt, in the history of the franchise, Traitors US, Traitors UK, Traitors Canada, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, you name it – he’s the worst player in the history of the game,” he said.

I had to play with him. I should have been given the prize money for that alone.

He also said he thought Paudie signed up for a different Irish reality show.

I think Paudie signed up for the wrong show. I think he thought he signed up for Ireland’s Fittest Family.

We’d be at missions, no word of a lie, and Paudie would be like ‘where’s Davy Fitz?’. That is not this show, buddy.

Honestly, he thought Mark was Donncha O’Callaghan.

He also shed light on Paudie’s plan to name fellow traitor Katelyn at the roundtable.

Eamon: It is what it is. He had no game playing bone in his body. The only thing he ever did in the whole game was bring Katelyn’s name up.

Kevin McGahern: Was that a genuine mistake?

Eamon: He hadn’t a clue what was going on.

This is the problem. My focus ended up on being on getting rid of him. So coming up in to this game, I had a couple of strategies and one was I was going to be majorly involved in getting rid of a traitor at some stage.

I’m sitting here in the couch, he’s there in the castle. Fair enough. He can’t survive from here.

Eamon had a nice opportunity here to take the high road and congratulate the player who outlasted him. But he chose not to. It’s hard to see how the other two traitors can survive but the records will show that Eamon was the first traitor to be banished.
