The Love Island USA family is mourning the loss of executive producer James Barker, who died at age 40 after suffering what Peacock and ITV America described as an “unexpected medical emergency” while filming the show’s eighth season in Fiji. Barker’s death occurred last week as production continued on one of streaming television’s most popular reality franchises.
According to a joint statement released on Monday, June 15, to NBC News, Barker was working on location in Fiji when the medical emergency occurred. Neither Peacock nor ITV America has publicly disclosed the specific cause of death. The network confirmed that Barker will be honored during the June 16 episode of Love Island USA, which is currently airing its eighth season after premiering on Peacock earlier this month.
Barker had become a key figure behind the scenes of the dating competition series since joining Love Island USA in 2020. He initially worked as a story producer before rising through the ranks to executive producer, a role he held for the last three seasons.
Beyond shaping storylines, Barker played a major role in both production and post-production, helping oversee the show’s music selections. His work also extended to Love Island Games, the franchise’s successful spinoff series.
The impact of his loss was reflected in a statement from Peacock and ITV America, which described Barker as a central part of the production team.
“James’ unimaginable loss has been deeply felt across not just the entire Love Island USA production, but throughout all of ITV and Peacock,” the companies said.
The statement continued, “He was a beloved and greatly valued member of our collective family whose kindness, talent, and dedication left an indelible mark on all of us and everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.”
The companies also extended condolences to “James’ partner, family, friends, and colleagues.”
Long before becoming one of the driving creative forces behind Love Island USA, Barker built an extensive résumé in unscripted television. He launched his career at Leftfield Pictures in 2011, producing episodes of Pawn Stars, Counting Cars, and Forged in Fire.
He later worked on Queer Eye and projects for Scout Productions, Sharp Entertainment, and Kinetic Content.
Just days before his death, Barker celebrated the launch of Season 8 on Instagram and praised the team responsible for bringing the series back to screens.
“We come to Fiji for magic. We come to @loveislandusa to laugh, to cry, to care,” he wrote. “Hope you’re all enjoying the new season brought to you by a huge squad of brilliant people.”
