The ‘physical media’ comeback continues with a famous brand name

The vinyl and music culture specialists Golden Discs are set to expand their presence in Cork – with a new store in Douglas due to open later this summer.
The store in the Douglas Village shopping centre will be offering everything from classic, collectors and new music on vinyl to clothing, merchandising and DVDs. Recent years have seen a resurgence in so-called ‘physical media’ with more and more people wanting to own albums, movies and more on disc or DVD, rather than just pay a subscription to access these online.
Golden Discs was a familiar brand on Patrick Street for many years, through the 70s, 80s and 90s but the chain founded in Dublin in the 1960s was almost put out of business – along with many other record stores – in the noughties as the digital. revolution took hold.
However, vinyl has staged a huge comeback, and Cork city has seen the return of the likes of HMV in Merchant’s Quay – with their store opening last October – along with a thriving independently owned record scene.
Golden Discs already have a flagship store on Patrick Street – at the old Pavilion Cinema building – which has recently had a major upgrade on its facade.
The chain is already hiring for their Douglas Village outlet and they will be hoping that local music and pop culture fans will choose to shop with them rather than buy online over the coming months as they look to establish a home for collectors and fans in Douglas.
