The world’s leading photography competition has arrived at Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum, with an exhibition of the winners, highly commended, and “best of the rest” opening at the weekend.

Now in its 61st year, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition is regarded as, perhaps, the most
prestigious photography contest for wildlife, environmental and natural history pictures that showcase hidden animal behaviour, spectacular species, and the breathtaking diversity of the natural world.

The 100 images on display are carefully curated by a panel of adjudicators at the Natural History Museum in London and sent on a roving exhibition around the globe.

Exhibition visitors will have the chance to enter the draw to win the ultimate expedition cruise for two, valued at more than $20,000: an eight-day Alaska expedition with National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions, travelling through the spectacular coastlines of Alaska and British Columbia.

The display is on until August 23 and is free with museum entry.
