AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – In a letter mailed by MCBS, LLC, a company that provides billing support for health care providers, is notifying some patients connected to Stephen W. Brown & Radiology Associates of Augusta that their personal information may have been impacted by a network security incident.
MCBS said it obtained patient information from the radiology practice to provide medical billing services.
In the notification, MCBS said it learned on or about Sept. 25, 2025, that an unauthorized individual may have gained access to its network.
MCBS said it immediately began an investigation and worked with external cybersecurity professionals.
After what the company described as an extensive forensic investigation and document review, MCBS said it discovered on around May 28, 2026, that certain files containing personal information may have been subject to unauthorized acquisition during a window of time the letter lists as approximately Sept. 22–26, 2025.
The letter states the information potentially impacted includes:
- Name and address
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Health plan beneficiary number
- Health insurance policy number or subscriber identification number
- Other health insurance information
- Medical history
- Mental or physical condition
- Medical treatment information
- Diagnosis information
MCBS said it is not aware of misuse or fraudulent activity related to anyone’s personal or health information as a result of the incident.
The letter encourages patients to take general identity-theft precautions, including reviewing medical records and Explanation of Benefits statements for errors or services not received and reporting suspicious activity to a health care provider.
The letter also references consumer guidance available through the Federal Trade Commission.
MCBS said it is providing complimentary access to identity monitoring services through Kroll for 12 months as a precaution.
Patients who receive the letter may want to keep it for their records and consider taking steps commonly recommended after data-breach notifications, such as placing a fraud alert or security freeze on credit files and regularly reviewing financial account statements and credit reports.
