‘He left a wonderful legacy behind him’

Tributes have poured in following the death of Galway historian Gerry Devlin.
He passed away peacefully on Monday July 6.
The Ballinasloe native was a treasured member of the community, with several local groups issuing touching tributes to him.
Ballinasloe Cycling Club said: “Everyone in Ballinasloe Cycling Club extend their Deepest Condolences to the Devlin Family after the passing of Gerry.
“Our thoughts are with Betty, Lorraine, Gary, Robert, Benjamin, Breda and Gerry’s Grandkids Aoife, Luke and Jack.
“We are thinking of you all at this sad time.
“Ar dheis dé go raibh a anam.”
Meanwhile, the Ballinasloe World War One Heritage Group were deeply saddened by the passing of one of their “stalwart members and treasurer”.
They added: “He was instrumental in so many heritage projects for decades and always generous with his skills & time to help people in any way he could. Rest in Peace Gerry.”
Ballinasloe Life Magazine said: “His legacy to us all in the 21st Century was to make us more comfortable and familiar with all the facets of our past – complicated or simple.

“His gregarious charm, natural wit and generous disposition warmed himself into the most reluctant of hearts.”
He will repose in Grenham’s Funeral Home, Ballinasloe (H53 HK15), on Wednesday, the 8th of July, from 5pm to 7pm, with Removal afterwards to St. Michael’s Church, Ballinasloe (H53 CV05).
Gerry’s Requiem Mass will take place on Thursday at 12 noon, with burial afterwards in Creagh Cemetery.
