Taylor Swift is withholding from us. It’s been over a week since she and Travis Kelce got married at Madison Square Garden, and we’ve seen little to nothing of the wedding itself but for a string of nice photos of her guests on Instagram and some leaked images from the entryway courtesy of The Daily Mail. At Paris Couture Week, Dior creative director Jonathan Anderson confirmed that he will share pictures of Swift’s dress after she posts the look herself, but otherwise we all sit here, in limbo, waiting for a mere snapshot from the wedding of the century. There is, however, one notable distraction in all this, and that’s the tacit confirmation of the existence of Swift and Kelce’s mystery dog.

Who is this creature? What’s its name? Its gender? (Not that it matters.) Its breed? What does it like to do for fun? How old is it? Does it like playing fetch? What’s its favorite Era? Is it a Chiefs fan? Does it wear clothes? Questions are boundless, endless. All we know for sure is that this dog, with its fluffy white fur and jaunty gait, is already an international diva of mystery. Please, can’t we at least just learn the name?

Rumors of Swift having or getting a dog started circulating late last year, when Kelce reflected back on their Christmas together on his podcast, New Heights. “The best gift that I got was from Taylor, but it gives away things that we’re trying to keep in house,” he told his brother, Jason. At the end of March, a video of a big white fluffy dog getting out of Swift’s car began to make the rounds on Twitter. Sure, this could be some random dog who happened to be in the car with Swift and Kelce — fans speculated it could be one of her security guards’ dogs — but the canine intrigue continued. When photos leaked from the welcome vestibule at Swift and Kelce’s wedding, eagle-eyed fans were certain they spotted a picture of Swift, Kelce, and the mysterious pup, blurry and obscured like a picture of Bigfoot. On July 12, Taypuppy was spotted again, exiting Swift’s private jet having touched down in Florida after the dog’s alleged owners attended former Kansas City Chief JuJu Smith-Schuster’s wedding in California.

Why would Swift and Kelce hide their dog? When Kelce said he wanted to keep his Christmas gift “in house,” it’s possible he meant it literally. Or a doghouse. That Swift and Kelce would work to hide their dog may be an attempt to live a more private life together. Maybe it’s a test run, say, for occluding other future loved ones from the watchful eye of the press. Maybe we’ve already heard the dog’s name in a song or two, if it is indeed hers. Or: Maybe they’re keeping the dog a secret because Swift is a famous cat person and, as all cat owners know, getting a dog can be a betrayal of cat values.

At least with Swift’s wedding dress, we have a vague sense of knowing this information will come our way eventually. There are no guarantees about the dog. There’s a universe, however, in which we never learn anything about Swift’s dog. It may remain, like many things across the vast expanses of time, a complete mystery. If we know one thing, however, it’s that whoever this pup is, it’s really cute and well-traveled.
