Mick McCarthy called Piers Morgan a “w*nker” live on air this week, a moment the Irishman said he had been waiting for for quite some time.

McCarthy appeared alongside Simon Jordan on Morgan’s Sports Uncensored show to review the weekend’s World Cup action, but the conversation broadened out to an old feud between the pair.

Back in November 2009, while McCarthy was manager of Wolves, Morgan wrote a scathing column in the Daily Mail after McCarthy dropped 10 players for a Premier League trip to Old Trafford. Unsurprisingly, Manchester United cruised to a 3-0 win over the much-changed minnows.

In his column, Arsenal-supporting Morgan labelled McCarthy the Premier League’s “greatest egotist,” labelling his decision to put out a B-team “appallingly arrogant,” and saying:

For that reason, I hope Wolves get stuffed 4-0 by Burnley today, are relegated at the end of the season and McCarthy gets sacked and replaced by Roy Hodgson.

17 years later, McCarthy finally gave Morgan a piece of his mind during his appearance on World Cup Uncensored.

A clip of the disagreement between the pair was shared on social media, with things escalating quickly after Morgan complimented McCarthy’s career as a manager.

Here’s the full transcript of what was said between the pair.

Morgan: “I’ve always respected you hugely as a manager, genuinely.”

McCarthy: “Except when I dropped ten players at Wolverhampton.”

Morgan: “Yes, well that was terrible.”

McCarthy: “You did say something that I was particularly unhappy with.”

Morgan: “Well, I thought it was shocking […] What was your problem with what I said? You must have known I was right.”

McCarthy: “You’re never right, mate. You just antagonise people with your comments, which you’re doing on this show, clearly. I said it, my job is to win games. We went to Spurs on the Saturday before, we won 1-0 with about 35% possession. We’ve got Manchester United on the Tuesday, I went there and dropped 10 players. I’d a squad of 22, if I’m a manager, it’s my right to manage that team how I see, and get results.”

Morgan: “And it’s my right, as an Arsenal fan, who you were directly impacting with your cowardice-“

McCarthy: “Because you weren’t good enough to win the title…you weren’t good enough, so you blame me, which is real bad on your part”

Morgan: “Now I know what Roy Keane’s problem was…by dropping 10 players, you let United walk all over you, which had a direct impact on my team’s chances of winning the league. I thought that was an appalling abdication of your duty as a manager to entertain the fans with the best available team.

McCarthy: “My duty was to beat Burnley on the Saturday, and we did.”

The line referring to Roy Keane and Saipan was a low blow on McCarthy, who responded with a brutal put-down.

“I’ve been waiting…how many years?” McCarthy said

15 years to say it, you know? I’ve been waiting 15 years to call you a wanker, so happy days.

Mick McCarthy has clearly struck a nerve with Piers Morgan, with the much-maligned talk-show host taking to Twitter to defend himself with a link to his original article.
