An “excellent” Irish drama has just been given a promising update.
Marian Keyes’ beloved series The Walsh Sisters was brought to life last year, starring Derry Girls actress Louisa Harland and House of Guinness star Danille Galligan.
Set in their Dublin hometown, the first season introduced the dysfunctional yet lovable family, with Rachel (Caroline Menton) facing drug addiction and Anna (Louisa) overcoming grief after her boyfriend’s death, while they navigate life with their devout mother and bemused father.
Along with sisters Maggie (Stefanie Preissner), Claire (Danille Galligan) and Helen (Máiréad Tyers), they navigate their own dramas, past traumas, family and friendships, and the peaks and troughs of their 20s and 30s.

The BBC synopsis teases: “They don’t always get along, but they always have each other’s backs. Five Irish sisters navigate heartbreak, grudges and glorious chaos – inspired by Marian Keyes’s bestsellers.”
It goes on: “This is a sisterhood full of in-jokes, hand-me-down resentments and more than a few old wounds. But their DNA, history and shared love of power ballads keep the Walsh sisters together in the face of heartbreak, grief, addiction and parenthood.”
RTÉ has now confirmed a second season will be following, with The Walsh Sisters back in production.
“Their lives evolve after the twin dramas of a stint in rehab for Rachel and a life-altering tragedy for Anna,” an announcement teased.

This comes after author Marian hinted at wanting her storylines to develop onto screen further, when the first season made its way onto the BBC.
She joked: “I kind of feel like I’ve overdosed on my luck,” as she reflected on how long it took for this series to come about, with the first book of the series having been published in 1995.
She added: “There’s a part in Rachel’s Holiday, if the second series gets made… Daddy Walsh joins a local am-dram group, which is doing Oklahoma, and he method acts his way to his rehearsals and all, and he talks in an Oklahoma accent and wears a cowboy hat.
“I would give anything for that to be made, I would find that so, so funny.”
Stefanie, who wrote the series as well as playing Maggie, added: “I’m hoping by the end of episode six, there’s still more, it’s not stuff that we can’t make.”
