The Gist

  • Arnold Schwarzenegger celebrated his 79th birthday with his workout routine.

  • He shared photos of himself pumping iron, proving that age isn’t slowing him down.

  • “Do the work,” he wrote in the caption.

Health is wealth, as people say, and Arnold Schwarzenegger takes that phrase to heart. The former professional-bodybuilder-turned-actor turned 79 years old on July 30, and he commemorated the milestone with none other than an intense workout.

The Terminator star shared a pair of photos with his 26.6 million Instagram followers. The cover slide shows Schwarzenegger pumping iron at a lat pulldown machine, while the second photo sees him performing bicep curls. He’s pictured in an all-black ensemble, composed of a T-shirt, athletic shorts, dark shades, and a snazzy gold watch.

“I turn 79 today. I don’t want any gifts. Instead, my team and I are turning the fitness industry upside down,” he wrote in the caption, encouraging others to work out.

Schwarzenegger is running a promotion at his gym, the Pump Club, through August 9, where users who join the Pump Club app and complete four workout programs in their first year pay nothing. “Zero. Nada. Zilch. Sign up. Try it free for 7 days. Pay $100 for your first year. Complete four programs. Get $100 back automatically. $50 after your first, $50 after your fourth.”

He continued, adding, “No fine print. Show up, do the work, and your first year is free.”

Schwarzenegger went on to share that the Pump Club is not backed by a private equity or hedge fund, but rather himself. “This is a crusade, not just a business. I’ve been trying to get people to train for six decades, and I finally found something that works. If I can make millions of you train all year, I’ll take the loss.”

Schwarzenegger’s passion for fitness runs deep, as he started working out at just 15, per an October 10 Business Insider article. At the peak of his bodybuilding career, he performed as many as 100 sets of exercises during five-hour workouts to target every muscle group. He’s won about 20 major bodybuilding and powerlifting competitions, including seven Mr. Olympia titles and five Mr. Universe titles.

The Commando star still trains nearly every day, but his workouts last about half an hour now. He also prefers to use machines over free weights and told the publication, “The basic exercises are the most underrated exercises.”
