Following in the footsteps of fellow Britpop-era bands like Oasis and Gene, Elastica are apparently the latest musical group planning to reunite after decades apart.
The rock band, led by lead singer Justine Frischmann and drummer Justin Welch following the duo’s departure from fellow British rock band Suede, was active from 1992 until their break-up was announced in 2021.
Elastica’s launch off the early ’90s success of Suede, paired with Frischmann’s long-term, highly publicized relationship with Blur singer Damon Albarn, placed the group at the heart of the Britpop scene and the “Cool Britannia” movement at the turn of the millennium.
The band released two albums during their time together, with their debut album Elastica (1995) becoming the fastest-selling debut album in UK history, with the group making a rare transatlantic hit with the album’s leading single, “Connection,” which reached #2 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.
Their sophomore (and final) album, The Menace, arrived in 2000, 5 years later, after years of disputes and lineup changes within Elastica. Recorded over 3 years, the album peaked at a dismal #24 on the UK charts before the band announced that they were disbanding the following year.
25 years on, Elastica took to their official Instagram page to tease an announcement. Sharing a black-and-white photo of the group, captioned “Missed us?”.
“We’ve been busy behind the scenes, but we’re back,” the caption teased. “Keep your eyes peeled, there are some exciting things in the works,” the band announced, followed by an eyes emoji.
While Elastica didn’t specify what their return would look like — whether it was a new album, song, tour, or other project — but for their fans, after a quarter of a century of near silence, any news is good news when your favorite Britpop band promises to work together once more.
