Despite reports that the first-generation iPhone Air has struggled to gain traction with consumers, Apple is reportedly pressing ahead with a successor that addresses several of the model’s biggest shortcomings.
According to analyst Jeff Pu’s latest research note, the iPhone Air 2 is on track for a Q1 2027 launch and will introduce five notable hardware upgrades to make the ultra-thin smartphone more compelling.
The biggest change could be the addition of a second rear camera. The second-generation iPhone Air is expected to feature a 48MP ultra-wide camera, giving users greater flexibility for landscape, group, and macro photography. The original iPhone Air was widely criticised for offering only a single rear camera, making this one of the most meaningful upgrades.
Apple is also said to be refining the front of the device with a smaller Dynamic Island, allowing for a cleaner display and slightly more screen real estate without increasing the phone’s overall footprint.
Under the hood, the iPhone Air 2 is expected to receive a significant performance boost with the A20 Pro chip. Connectivity is also tipped to receive an upgrade. The device could feature Apple’s next-generation N2 wireless networking chip for improved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth performance, alongside the C2 5G modem.
The iPhone Air 2 is rumoured to debut alongside the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e in early 2027, as part of Apple’s new staggered iPhone release strategy. Under this reported roadmap, the flagship Pro models will continue launching in the second half of the year, while the standard, Air and entry-level models will arrive several months later.
