Gardeners are being told to scatter a common bathroom item on their grass for a ‘thicker and greener’ lawn this summer.

Many households across the UK will find that their grass has turned dry, dull and straw-like after prolonged spells of hot weather.

For this reason, it’s crucial for gardeners to maintain regular watering to give their grass an opportunity to bounce back.

However, watering on its own isn’t always sufficient to revive a struggling lawn. Instead, Eleni Veroutsos from Backyard Boss has shared a natural technique to help lawns appear more lush.

All you need is a product that’s available in the bathing aisle of most supermarkets.

“If you’re looking for a way to spruce up your lawn this summer and keep it green and healthy, look no further than using Epsom salt,” Eleni explained.

“With the simple addition of Epsom salt to your lawn care routine, you get optimal results without worrying about harsh synthetic chemicals or doing extensive work.”

It may seem odd to apply salt to your garden, but Epsom salt isn’t actually a cooking salt. It’s a naturally occurring mineral rich in nutrients that can be advantageous for your lawn, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Epsom salt is widely available as a bath soak, renowned for its muscle-soothing properties, but it also supplies magnesium which assists plants in producing more chlorophyll, resulting in a richer, deeper green colour.

Applying Epsom salt to your lawn throughout the summer will not only improve its appearance but will also encourage photosynthesis, allowing the grass to absorb greater amounts of sunlight.

Your lawn will then be able to harness that additional energy not just to withstand the heat, but also to bounce back more swiftly, sprouting extra grass blades and developing a more robust root system.

Increased chlorophyll production will help lawns hold onto greater levels of moisture during warmer weather, keeping the grass dense and healthy — meaning unsightly brown patches need not be a concern for the remainder of the season.

How to use Epsom salt in gardens:

To get started, dissolve one tablespoon of Epsom salt per litre of water. Ensure it is fully mixed in a sprayer, spreader, or watering can prior to application.

The optimum time to water your lawn with Epsom salt is in the morning or early evening. Summer afternoons can prove excessively hot, with the sun at its highest point, reducing the amount of water that penetrates the grass roots.

Watering lawns in the afternoon is not only largely inefficient but also carries the risk of scorching the grass, as water droplets can heat up rapidly, placing considerable strain on the lawn. Epsom salt ought to be treated as a supplement designed to give your lawn an added boost, rather than a substitute for fertiliser, as an excess of any single nutrient can prove damaging to the soil if applied too liberally.

It should be used no more than once every six weeks, though the majority of lawns will require just a single application per season.

The outcome should be visibly thicker, more luscious grass, all without resorting to any harmful chemicals.
