Bengaluru: One of the first things visitors encounter at Science Gallery Bengaluru’s (SGB) new exhibition on quantum physics is perhaps its most famous thought experiment: Schrödinger’s Cat. But here, the cat’s fate is literally in the visitors’ hands.At the entrance stands a lenticular artwork of the cat, accompanied by nine booklets. Pick one, and you decide whether the cat is alive or dead — a playful introduction to the counterintuitive world of quantum mechanics, where multiple possibilities can exist until they are observed.That playful spirit runs through the entire exhibition.Opening to the public free of cost today, Quantum is SGB’s latest exhibition that brings together 34 exhibits by over 14 interdisciplinary artists from six countries. Quantum uses art, design, games and immersive installations to experience concepts such as superposition, entanglement, tunnelling and the observer effect that encourage curiosity rather than intimidation.For Jahnavi Phalkey, founding director of Science Gallery Bengaluru, that was always the central idea. “Quantum is probably the only field where science works perfectly, but its interpretation is still difficult to grasp because we can’t actually see what’s happening. Simple artistic representations can make complex concepts feel real, relatable, and easier to understand. Our aim is to make quantum less mysterious without taking away its sense of wonder.”Among the exhibition’s standout installations is Fowl Actions at a Distance, which explores whether birds perceive the earth’s magnetic field. The work began as a real experiment on a farm in Sarjapura, where chickens were trained to respond to an electromagnet placed beneath their feeding bowl. Inside the gallery, the farm is recreated using motion-capture imagery, holographic-style projections, hay and sound. What first appears to be white birds wandering behind a translucent curtain gradually reveals an experiment at the intersection of biology, physics, and art.Another crowd-puller is Quantum Jungle, an immersive installation where visitors interact with a web of springs and lights. Touching the springs generates particles that travel through an illuminated network. Instead of following a single route, the particles spread into multiple possible paths simultaneously — a visual representation of quantum superposition.Visitors can play Small Void, a two-player game inspired by quantum entanglement; explore Multiverse of Maps, an artwork created through a collaboration between artist David Young and a quantum computer; and discover an installation that draws parallels between the synchronised flashing of fireflies and quantum behaviour.Beyond the installations, the exhibition also pays tribute to the people who shaped quantum science. It features displays on pioneering physicists, including a dedicated Women of Quantum section curated in collaboration with Women in the History of Quantum Physics, highlighting the often-overlooked contributions of women to the field.Recognising that quantum physics can still feel daunting, the gallery has stationed trained mediators throughout the exhibition. They explain the exhibits and the science behind them in English, Kannada and several other Indian languages, ensuring visitors of all ages and backgrounds can engage with the ideas.This exhibition will run at the gallery for the next one year and it will be followed by next year’s exhibiton on Intelligence.
