Chicago Fire actor Dermot Mulroney has spoken about his exit from the show following the announcement of his departure after two seasons of playing Battalion Chief Dom Pascal.
The star made his debut on the show in season 13, with his exit confirmed after the season 14 finale aired. That episode ended on a cliffhanger, with Pascal included in the first episode of season 15 only, in order to conclude the storyline.
Speaking at the Flashback Weekend fan convention in Chicago last week (via Entertainment Weekly), Mulroney spoke about leaving the show and explained that the decision wasn’t his.

“They write the character off,” he said, “So, we gave it our all for two seasons.”
Mulroney, who has appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Scream and Insidious franchises, David Fincher’s Zodiac, the romcom My Best Friend’s Wedding, and Prime Video’s Hanna series, explained that Chicago Fire was his “first call for straight up network television”.
He found the process of playing the same character for 22 episode seasons a “fascinating” experience, especially with the “incredibly challenging scenes” dealing with the death of Pascal’s wife.
“It’s devastating”, he said. “But you’re doing it in a movie and guess what? That day’s over, and it’s gone. You shot that scene, and then they end the movie, and that’s the end of it.

“On TV, guess what? She’s dead next week, too. And it starts to feel really heavy. And they asked that of me, and I delivered.”
He also praised the “incredible storyline” the writers gave him, and the friendships he struck up with “incredible” people like Taylor Kinney.
Now that he’s filmed his final Chicago Fire appearance, Mulroney said that he’s “sad to see it go”.
Newer episodes of Chicago Fire air on Sky Witness and can be streamed on Sky/NOW, while older episodes are available to stream via Prime Video in the UK. The show airs on NBC in the US, and streams on Peacock.
