There wasn’t a dry eye across Ireland after the Westmeath Rose left the audience completely moved by sharing her personal journey with alopecia.
The Rose of Tralee got under way on Monday, with viewers getting their first glimpse of the talented young women vying for the coveted 2026 title.
However, one contestant in particular captured hearts, as she courageously opened up to the crowd by showcasing her wig collection.
Caoilfhinn Ní Choiligh, 25, was first diagnosed with alopecia areata when she was just 15 years old. Following her hair loss, she became a passionate advocate for the autoimmune condition, going on to found The Hair Loss Haven, while also training to become a wig maker.
The inspiring young woman, who says she makes a point of appreciating life’s smaller moments, expressed her desire for others experiencing hair loss to feel both supported and seen, reports RSVP Live.
“These are my favourite wigs. I like to swap it up. A pro to having my hair loss, I try to look on the bright side, like I can change my hair whenever I want.”
She told Kathryn Thomas that she had no interest in being pitied, before making her way over to a table where three wigs had been carefully laid out.
The crowd at the Kerry Sports Academy burst into rapturous applause as Caoilfhinn confidently removed her dark brown wig, switching to a blonde one to the delight of the audience.
“Embrace the imperfections,” she declared, as she was rewarded with a well-deserved standing ovation. The Rose Selection programme will broadcast on Monday, August 17, and Tuesday, August 18, from 8pm, pausing for the Nine O’Clock News before continuing at 9:35pm, live on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.
