If you’ve been having Sharon Horgan withdrawal symptoms since finishing her brilliantly unconventional romantic comedy Catastrophe and hysterically dark Bad Sisters, HBO has given us something to look forward to. The Motherland creator is returning to the small screen with a personal new divorce drama in the form of Youth.
There isn’t much Sharon Horgan can’t do, but she particularly excels at creating messy, funny and relatable family dramas and Youth is no exception. This time, she’s bringing to life a newly divorced middle-aged woman (played by Sharon) who’s embarking on a sexual reawakening – but let’s just say she’ll come up against a fair few obstacles along the way. Boasting a stellar cast and Sharon’s creative magic, it’s set to be her best series since Bad Sisters.
Intrigued? With the drama set to arrive on our screens later this year, here’s everything you need to know about Youth, including the plot, cast and how to watch it.
What is Youth about?
Landmark Productions
The upcoming drama is set to be a thrilling and entertaining tale of self-discovery. The series will follow a 50-year-old divorcée (played by Sharon Horgan) who’s searching for love (and sex), while navigating caring for her elderly parents and her should-be grown-up son. It’s classic Horgan territory.
Joining Sharon Horgan on the cast list are: Sherwood’s Sharlene Whyte, Amandaland’s Robbie Gee, Slow Horse’s Freddie Fox, Coronation Street’s Anne Reid, Succession’s Harriet Walter and Cillian Murphy’s son, Aran Murphy. Amy Gravitt, the Executive Vice President, HBO & Max Comedy Programming, shares what makes Horgan’s work so relatable.
‘We’re thrilled to be reunited with Sharon. Her willingness to offer up her own experiences through the characters she creates makes us all feel a little less lonely, that is what sets her comedy apart so brilliantly,’ she tells HBO. ‘She also has such a sharp eye for material and a strong desire to shepherd other people’s stories, we’re looking forward to the new talent she will bring into the fold.’

What other Sharon Horgan dramas can I watch now?
Apple TV+
If you can’t wait any longer for Sharon Horgan to be back on our screens, we’d suggest the brilliant Bad Sisters. Apple TV’s dark comedy follows Grace (Anne-Marie Duff) and her sisters after the death of her abusive husband John Paul (Claes Bang). Bad Sisters is available to watch now on Apple TV. For a more emotional watch, we’d recommend Best Interests. The BBC One drama sees Sharon star alongside Michael Sheen as married couple Nicci and Andrew. When their daughter Marnie (Niamh Moriarty) is diagnosed with a rare health condition, doctors question whether they should continue treatment. Best Interests is available to watch now on Netflix.
