This August, Athens became home to bustling students, heat advisories and an abundance of live music. The Red & Black has compiled a list of concerts for the week ahead, including Ritmos y Raíces Dance Weekender, Goth Night and Futurebirds.

hey, nothing

Who: hey, nothing is an Athens-based band with pop-punk and indie-folk elements. They will be hosting a release party for their second album, “Hound,” which drops Friday, Aug. 21.

Where: Flicker Theatre & Bar

When: Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m.

Futurebirds

Who: Since their start as UGA students years ago, Futurebirds has captivated listeners with country rock, Americana and folk—with inspirations from psychedelic rock and jam bands. To celebrate their 15th anniversary, the band will return to Athens for a two-night stay to play classics and preview their new two-volume album, “Far Out Country I & II.” As of writing, Friday’s show has sold out.

When: Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m. both nights.

Ritmos y Raíces Athens Dance Weekender

Who: UGA school departments such as the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute, the Department of Dance and more have teamed up for the second annual Ritmos y Raíces. Working with TIMBAthens, a nonprofit dance organization, a full weekend of activities will be offered, starting on Friday with a “Welcome Party” at Athentic Brewing Company. Saturday begins with a morning of workshops, concluding with a headlining concert event at Live Wire Athens. Sunday morning finishes off the weekend with more workshops. The entire weekend offers priced passes for each day or for the event as a whole. A vast assortment of dancers, dance teachers, performers and live music artists will appear at the various events.

When: 8 p.m. on Friday. Workshops run from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and the concert at Live Wire Athens begins at 8 p.m. Sunday’s workshops run from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Goth Night

Who: Every month, local artists from genres like goth, industrial and dark wave team up to host an event focused on dance and live music. DJ’s Crowe, Tomb Lily and Goth Dad will return to play alongside Twin Powers, member of DJ trio Booty Boyz.

Where: Ciné, 234 W. Hancock Ave.

When: Doors open at 9 p.m. and the show begins at 9:30 p.m.

Rock the Ark Summer Bash

Who: Creature Comforts’ Ark has created a Summer of Stability Fund intended to raise money for low-income working families around Athens. To help raise money, they are hosting a summer bash with performances from Karma Kat, Florence Cardigan and Cannon Rogers. The event will also host a silent auction, drinks and raffles.

Where: Creature Comforts Brewery, 271 W. Hancock Ave. 

When: Doors open at 5 p.m. and the music begins at 5:30 p.m.

Happy Landing, The Band Solstice

Who: Happy Landing is a band from Oxford, Mississippi with a focus on mixing folk, southern rock and punk. They will take the stage to celebrate the release of their second album, “Big Sun.” The Band Solstice is from Knoxville, Tennessee and combines indie rock with folk rock.

Where: 40 Watt Club, 285 W. Washington St. 

When: Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m.

Segar Jazz Affair Smooth Jazz with Marcus Click

Who: Marcus Click is a contemporary jazz alto saxophonist from Kentucky. He will be performing two shows for the Segar Jazz Affair and Aubrey Entertainment, with breaks in between each.

Where: Hendershot’s, 237 Prince Ave. 

When: Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The first show begins at 7:30 p.m. and the second at 8:45 p.m.
