Jay McGuinness was eliminated from Celebrity MasterChef this Wednesday (19 August), after a series of kitchen mishaps. But for viewers, they felt his fate was unjustified, with many suggesting that another star should have been sent home.

The Wanted singer was the first contestant to exit after two disasters sealed his fate. During the first challenge, Jay served up a cheesecake that wouldn’t come out of its tin, prompting new judge Giorgio Locatelli to recommend using more butter to perfect his dish.

Later on, things only got worse for Jay after he cooked a mushroom pie, which Giorgio, Grace Dent and guest judge Paddy McGuinness predicting that the dish could be a recipe for disaster if he didn’t get the timings right.

While Grace and Paddy tried to remain reassuring, Giorgio was more critical of Jay’s work as he lamented that the pastry had “cracked a lot,” adding: “It has definitely got a problem. It’s too crumbly and is almost sandy. You’ve added too much fat into the mixture.”

It was enough for Jay to be eliminated from the first heat, as the singer was later told that he had failed to make it through to the quarter final. But the judges’ decision left viewers with a multitude of complaints.

Many were disappointed to see Jay leave the competition, with another handful of viewers believing that the judges had made the “wrong decision”. Other fans, meanwhile, thought that Jason Mohammad should have hung up his apron.

Speaking about his elimination, Jay didn’t conceal his disappointment, saying: “I am one of five siblings, I was in a band of five boys, there are five of us mini MasterChefs. It sucks to go. I hate to break up the band. But the memories last.”

While Jay has been eliminated, his co-stars Shakira Khan, Joe Pasquale, Emily Campbell and Jason have all made it through to the quarter final for the first heat. But who will be joining them?
