American network FX has announced Legends, a Sons of Anarchy spin-off that features the original cast. This isn’t just your typical prequel or sequel, however, as it’s taking a very different – and very meta – twist on things.
As detailed in The Hollywood Reporter, the “wild twist” of the limited series will feature the cast playing fictionalised versions of themselves, in a plot that’s more than slightly reminiscent of the cult classic film Galaxy Quest.
“When the cast of Sons of Anarchy reunites at a fan convention after more than a decade, the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show”, reads the synopsis.

Not only will Charlie Hunnam be back, but the whole thing is actually his idea!
Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment, said: “When Charlie brought us this inspired idea, we instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision.
“Charlie’s talents are on full display as a writer, performer and executive producer, leading the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know.”
He’ll be joined by fellow returning stars Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Mark Boone Junior, Theo Rossi, Kim Coates, Maggie Siff and Tommy Flanagan.

It’s not the first spin-off for Sons of Anarchy, which ran for seven seasons and 92 episodes between 2008 and 2014.
There was Mayans MC, which ran for five seasons and 50 episodes between 2018 and 2023, with a different main cast.
More actors are set to be announced for Legends in due course, though we don’t have a release window for the show just yet.
Meanwhile, Hunnam is currently filming a BBC adaptation of John le Carré’s Legacy of Spies, and is riding a wave of acclaim for his Emmy-nominated performance in Monster: The Ed Gein Story.
All episodes of Sons of Anarchy are available on Disney+.
