A decade after reuniting, The Three Amigos had become one of the biggest success stories in Irish country music. With their annual tours selling out months in advance and fans flocking to see the unique chemistry between Robert Mizzell, Patrick Feeney and Jimmy Buckley, the built a show that’s bigger than any one of them could have imagined.
When RSVP Country sat dawn with the three singers, they eagerly reflected on the secret behind its enduring success, and the challenges they’ve overcome along the way. However, just weeks later it was announced that their forthcoming January 2027 tour had been cancelled, with singers Robert Mizzell and Patrick Feeney going on to announce they would move forward in a new direction.
Speaking about the fallout within the band, Patrick admitted that, “for the past couple of years, there has been growing tension within The Three Amigos.
“The support Robert and I have received over the past week has been truly unbelievable. Every message, phone call and word of encouragement has meant more to us than you could know.
“Because of that support, we have decided to move forward.”
Before their shock announcement, the trio reflected on working together and the joy they had gotten from the band over the last number of years.
For Jimmy Buckley, he revealed that the annual tour had become a highlight of an otherwise busy year spent pursuing their individual careers.
“It’s fantastic. We’ve become very established over the last few years,” Jimmy told RSVP Country.
“We tour every year for a month and the other 11 months of the year are taken up with our own individual work, so it’s nice to have that time together with the two lads each year.”
The Three Amigos for RSVP Country
Speaking on how the idea for The Three Amigos come about originally, Jimmy explained that the concept was inspired by the legendary American supergroup The Highwaymen, which brought together Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson.
“They were huge stars in their own right in America, but they got together and recorded and decided to take to the road together,” he said.
“No one was doing that concept in Ireland and we took it from there and cultivated and developed it over the years.”
And speaking on the bond between the trio, when he sat down with RSVP Country this summer, he revealed: “There’s a great camaraderie with the group. We help each other out and it’s that sort of all-for-one, one-for-all idea.”
While speaking on the huge success of The Three Amigos, Robert admitted that, when the group first began, they had no idea just how successful it would become.
“Initially, we started off playing to a couple of hundred people, and we didn’t know for sure whether it was going to take off,” he said.
“But it seems to be growing year on year and we know times are tough out there for people, so we appreciate the people who come to us.
“The fact that we have worked so long together now, we understand each other and when you see us in company with each other, we have a nice, easy, relaxing relationship.
“That’s not to say that we don’t argue from time to time, of course we do, but we understand each other and that mutual respect comes out in the performance.
“The brand has really got into people’s hearts and homes and we’re super fortunate.”
While Patrick said performing as part of The Three Amigos had offered them all a completely different experience to being a solo artist.
“It’s a totally different thing than being a solo performer,” he said.
“With The Amigos, we get to perform things that you may not get the opportunity to do by yourself. And the dynamic is completely different. Fans will tell you the fun that we have on stage.
“Our banter is probably half of the reason to go to The Amigos show. We’re very comfortable with each other on stage, we know each other very well and our personalities blend with each other.
“And that banter and fun, it’s not rehearsed. It’s all authentic.
“The fans seem to really like that, and they can see that it’s a very, very natural kind of show. It’s very different from our regular shows.”
Patrick said the group dynamic also meant the pressure of performing was shared between the three singers.
“I always look forward to our tour because it’s such a busy time for The Amigos. We’ve got a great band and team around us,” he said.
“And you also don’t have the same pressure on stage, it’s shared.”
The trio’s show had something for everyone, Patrick explained, with tributes to country legends, gospel, comedy and plenty of their own music.
“We pay tribute to some of the biggest country legends, both here in Ireland and in America,” he said.
“We do some gospel singing as well, and there is a lot of comedy through the show.
“In between that, we’d have our individual songs and we do a medley of songs that we would have recorded together that we’d be known for.
“And every year we always try and improve it, changing up the programme a little.
“It really appeals to a huge audience, even outside of country music, and there is a huge age range to the people coming to the shows, from their 20s to 80s.”
The end of The Three Amigos marks the close of a hugely successful chapter in Irish country music.
