Gardaí are searching for guns in Cork city following reports of a shot during an altercation after 3.30pm on Sunday.

Armed response gardaí responded following calls about a ‘riot’ in the Spring Lane area of Ballyvolane in the northside of Cork city this afternoon

Two males were hospitalised following the incident with injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

“Gardaí and emergency services responded to reports of a discharge of a firearm near Ballyvolane Road, Cork city this afternoon, Sunday, August 23,” a garda statement said.

“Two males are receiving treatment for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.”

It follows a period of heightened unrest around the Spring Lane area of Ballyvolane and is the second incident in 24 hours.

A significant garda presence has been active in the area today, just 24 hours after a similar presence attended for a lengthy period on Saturday afternoon.

On Saturday, a garda helicopter and several gardaí responded to a public order incident in the area.

It is understood that several individuals were involved in a disturbance around Spring Lane on Saturday afternoon. Gardaí were called to the area, but no complaints were made by any injured party on Saturday night.
