HBO’s hit prequel series It: Welcome to Derry has officially been renewed for a second season. Based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel It, the show serves as the origin story of the killer clown Pennywise, with Bill Skarsgård reprising his villainous role from the two films.
The first season of the horror series takes places in 1962, almost three decades before the events of the films, with the plot following a group of high school kids as they search for their missing friend in the titular Maine town.
The show debuted in October, and became one of the best-performing series for HBO Max, according to Deadline. Now, HBO has greenlit another instalment, with Brad Caleb Kane set to take over as sole showrunner after previously sharing the role with Jason Fuchs.

The second season will be set in 1935 during the Great Depression, and will centre around the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang. The bank robbers stop in Derry to buy some ammunition, and end up facing unimaginable horror along the way.
“We are excited to return to the chilling world of Derry and to further expand on Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s horrifically iconic adaptation,” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of HBO Max Original Programming.
“Together with Brad Caleb Kane, they will break new ground in season two, deepening the terror, the mystery and the unforgettable Pennywise lore that fans love to devour,” they continued.
Andy and Barbara Muschietti will return as executive producers, and said: “Continuing to explore and expand on the amazing world Stephen King created is an absolute privilege… Boy do we love our jobs!”
