However, it appears that word travels fast in Weatherfield. In the pub next week, Kirk Sutherland gleefully reveals that Brian and Maggie’s casual hook-up is the talk of Underworld…

“Maggie and Brian should’ve known to be more discreet,” teases our Coronation Street insider. “Scandal is what keeps the folk of Weatherfield going, and a whisper between sewing machines can spread like wildfire – as Kirk soon reveals.

“The humiliation of having everyone know about their private rendezvous could kill any chance of a potential romance for Maggie and Brian!”

Given that Brian overheard Maggie coldly condemning their night between the sheets as disappointing, there could already be friction between the two of them – and being at the centre of the local gossip mill will surely only make things worse.

With everyone eagerly chatting about Maggie and Brian’s unexpected union, will the hot gossip stoke the fires of their passion? Or will it extinguish the sparks for good?

Peter Gunn, who plays Brian, previously told us that he’s backing the idea of a future for this unlikely duo…

“Brian and Maggie would be a great pairing,” he said. “I think they could have a future together, because they’re an interesting fit. There’s mileage to be had, but who knows?”

The actor even discussed the possibility of Brian ending up in the Rovers as a result of his new connection to Maggie.

“Don’t be dangling that carrot in front of me – that’s too much!” he laughed. “I can pull a pint, that’s all I’m saying.

“The Rovers is the top of the tree, everything revolves around it. As an actor I couldn’t quite imagine myself there – that’d be scary! It’s legendary. My first scene in the Rovers I had to sing a duet with Julie, and I was so nervous!”

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
