India is comfortably on track to meet its goal to have 500 gigawatts (GW) of non-fossil-fuel power capacity installed by 2030, after having just hit the 300 GW milestone, New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi said at an industry event.
Early this month, India announced it had topped 300 GW of non-fossil fuel-based installed electricity generation capacity as of July 31, 2026. This is 60% of the 500 GW capacity targeted to be achieved by 2030.
Solar power led the capacity installations, with a total of 164.59 GW as of the end of July, followed by wind power with 58.14 GW installed capacity, hydropower at 57.24 GW, bio-power at 11.75 GW, and nuclear power capacity at 8.78 GW. These totaled 300.5 GW on July 31, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said.
Moreover, the share of non-fossil fuel electricity capacity in the country’s total electricity generation capacity, at around 552 GW at present, has exceeded 54%.
“Clean energy transition is no longer just a climate commitment—it is central to shaping India’s industrial competitiveness, energy independence, and economic resilience,” the ministry said.
India expects to nearly quadruple its solar power capacity and triple wind power-generating assets within ten years.
But the country currently faces high clean power curtailment rates due to lagging expansion in grid and transmission infrastructure.
As a result, solar power developers in India have started to add battery storage to photovoltaic projects to attract buyers and reduce the large share of curtailments for power supply that the grids are unable to absorb, Santosh Sarangi, Secretary of India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, said last week.
India’s electricity grid is expanding at a slower pace than the boom in renewable energy installations, leading to an increased share of clean energy curtailments and threatening to slow the solar and wind boom in the world’s most populous country.
