City residents are being urged to avail of a special opportunity next week to get rid of their hazardous waste, at an expanded collection event at Galway Racecourse.
The public are warned though that it’s for households only – and commercial or farm operators will be turned away on the day, as will those bringing non-hazardous waste.
Hazardous waste might seem a fairly broad term, but for anyone uncertain there is a definitive list of what constitutes hazardous waste, and what doesn’t.
Permitted materials include household chemicals, personal care products, garden chemicals, leftover paints and used brushes, solvents and automotive products. But the public are advised that things like medicines, medical waste, waste electrical and electronic equipment, and gas canisters are not defined as hazardous materials and must be disposed of elsewhere.
The collection takes place at Ballybrit on Saturday week, September 5th, and the cost is €10 for entry with registration available on the City Council website.
Carol Sweetnam, Senior Executive Scientist from the Regional Waste Management Planning Offices, says mishandling hazardous waste poses serious risks not only to our environment but also to public health.
“Improper disposal of hazardous waste can harm both ecosystems and local communities. This collection event aims to provide householders with an easy and convenient way to safely dispose of these materials, helping us protect and preserve a clean, safe environment for all.”
The Regional Waste Management Planning Offices and Galway City Council are teaming up to host the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday 5th September, from 8AM to 12PM at Galway Racecourse in Ballybrit.
