Those responsible for a shooting in west Belfast have been condemned for causing ”fear and distress” in the community.
Police said a man in his 40s has been left with “physical and emotional trauma” after receiving a gunshot to the leg. He was taken to hospital for treatment.
PSNI officers remained at the scene on Monday morning, in an alleyway between the Ross Road and the Falls Road.
Forensic officers were also in attendance following the incident which took place at around 9.30pm on Sunday night.
Paul Maskey, Sinn Féin MP for the area, said: “I condemn last night’s shooting in the Ross Road area of west Belfast.
“There is no place for this type of violence in our community. It is completely unacceptable and is not wanted by local people.
“Those responsible need to stop and think about the fear and distress their actions cause in the community.”

A PSNI spokesperson said: “At approximately 9.35pm, we received a report that our colleagues from Northern Ireland Ambulance Service were attending to a man with a gunshot wound in the vicinity of the Falls Road area.
“Officers attended the scene and located the man, aged in his late 40s, in an alley that runs between the Falls Road and Ross Road. He was shot once in his leg and has been taken to hospital for treatment.
“Although his injuries are thankfully not life-threatening, they are severe and will no doubt leave him with lasting physical and emotional trauma.
“This attack has caused fear and disruption in the very community those responsible for this criminal act claim to protect and there is no justification for this violence.“
