Two of Hollywood’s biggest summer blockbusters have just crossed major box office milestones, with The Odyssey sailing past $1 billion internationally and Spider-Man: Brand New Day swinging past $900 million domestically.
Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey has become the 17th movie to surpass $1 billion at the international box office, per Deadline. It is also the first Hollywood non-sequel and non-remake to reach that milestone since 2009’s Avatar.
The epic adaptation of Homer’s poem, which follows the Greek hero Odysseus on his long and treacherous journey home after the Trojan War, has now earned $1.014 billion overseas, with Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, John Leguizamo, Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jon Bernthal leading the cast.

The Odyssey opened to $264.1 million globally, giving Nolan his biggest worldwide opening ever. Its $139.6 million international debut was also the director’s biggest overseas opening.

It’s also making a major splash in premium formats, earning more than $457 million worldwide in IMAX, making it the highest-grossing film ever for the brand. IMAX recently announced that it would extend the movie’s run in 70mm IMAX auditoriums through the end of September.
Back in North America, another hero is having a very good summer.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is officially the second movie ever to cross $900 million at the domestic box office, following Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It reached the milestone in just 36 days, beating The Force Awakens’ 50-day record for the fastest trip to $900 million, per Deadline.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the latest installment in the Spider-Man franchise follows a lonely Peter Parker who has been fighting crime full-time four years after Spider-Man: No Way Home, living in a world that has completely forgotten who he is.
The movie stars Holland, 30, as Parker alongside Zendaya, 30, as MJ, as the two are joined by Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink and Bernthal, 49, who reprises his role as Frank Castle, aka the Punisher.
The movie finished its fifth week with $30.4 million, bringing its domestic total through Thursday to $899.7 million. According to Deadline, it is expected to cross the $900 million mark Friday, Sept. 4.
Holland’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has another milestone in sight: Brand New Day is closing in on The Force Awakens’ $936.6 million domestic record for the highest-grossing movie ever at the North American box office.
The film is expected to bring in around $18 million over the Friday-through-Monday Labor Day stretch, according to sources.
Both The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day are still playing in theaters.
