13:25 Haydock – Hankelow

ITV Racing returns Saturday with action from Haydock, Kempton and Ascot, starting here with a Group 3 over 1m. This one is interesting, with Dancing Gemini finally getting conditions he will love. I like HANKELOW, who has the chance to get to the lead and ran a fine third earlier in the season in the French 2000 Guineas on very soft ground. That was behind Rayif, which is top-class form. He’s flopped since over further, including at York last time, but if this is his trip and he’s back in good form, he’s got a right chance. Clifford Lee rides for Karl Burke.

A handicap over 7f. Conditions are perfect for THUNDER CALL, who could be another for William Haggas on the day, ridden by Cieren Fallon. My hope is up 2lb for a fine second over 6f here at the Shergar Cup, and he runs like a horse who will really enjoy stepping up to 7f – a distance he tried on debut but not since. His third to Jazl at Newmarket strongly suggested he will relish the distance.

Now a Listed event for juveniles over 1m. Guessing really, as the two big guns have only raced on fast ground. Charlie Appleby trained the horse that beat Rocket Boy last time, so it’s fair to think he knows where he is with that runner in sending out FIRST LAW. The selection looked good on debut – beating a Juddmonte hope – when scoring in a small field at Sandown, as he did everything wrong – missing the break, running green and hanging late on. The 1,000,000 will have learnt plenty and is probably going here before the Champagne Stakes. William Buick rides.

14:10 Ascot – Heyzoom

A handicap for 3yo over 1m4f. HEYZOOM has been gelded since his fine fourth at Royal Ascot behind Enceladus in the King George V Handicap. He was carried right 2f out that day when staying on and kept on in the closing stages, suggesting this trip is right up his street. Could be another Al Aasy type for connections and this is a big chance even though he’s gone up from 85 to 90 in the handicap. Owen Burrows trains with Saffie Osborne riding.

14:20 Kempton – Two Tempting (each-way)

The London Mile Series Final Handicap over, yep, a mile! Many in form horses feature here, but who has more to give?

TWO TEMPTING ran in this three years ago but reared at the stalls and never got competitive. Since then, he’s turned into a decent handicapper, and the handicapper has been kind in dropping him 1lb for a decent fourth to Whip Cracker at Chester last time. Has a really good draw to work from in stall 6 and while it’s not going to be easy at all under 9st 12lb I’d give him a solid eachway chance under Rob Hornby for Jonny Portman.

A handicap for 3yo over 1m6f. Let’s hope all eight line up. GALILEAN QUALITY is a strong stayer who will like the ground, so has to have strong claims. The in-form son of Teofilo was a fine second at York (despite not getting the clearest of passages) in the Melrose behind Infraad and that’s quality form in relation to this race – notably, the re-opposing Mythical Bay was well beaten off in 9th. Clifford Lee and Karl Burke again. Would just like a decent pace to run at, but he should get that.

A fascinating Group 3 September Stakes over 1m4f. Gethin has something to prove after flopping in the Eclipse and the one I like is TORNADO ALERT for Saeed Bin Suroor and Oisin Murphy. The lightly raced son of Too Darn Hot stays strong and started off his career on the all-weather. He once ran sixth in the Derby behind Lambourn and won a Group 1 in Germany at the end of last year. This term, he returned in Germany with a fourth at Hoppegarten behind Tiffany, and that should have put him spot on for this.

15:05 Haydock – Stressfree (each-way)

The Old Borough Cup Handicap over 1m6f. A decent handicap this. STRESSFREE has loads of form, making him very dangerous off a mark of 97 in the mud. David O’Meara’s hope was last off this rating in May of 2025 when he won at this track over 1m4f. Since then, he’s run a string of fine races, including when sixth at York last time in the Ebor. The handicapper has dropped him 2lb and this is a big opportunity. A decent each-way chance – it just depends if there are horses chucked in like Aegean Prince and Finalise. Mark Winn rides and hopefully wins.

15:40 Haydock – Almeraq

The big race of the day in the Group 1 Sprint Cup over 6f. A huge chance for ALMERAQ, who hasn’t had this ground since his early career when racing in a maiden and novice at Newbury and Yarmouth. He did get good to soft once at Ayr and hacked up there in an Ayr Gold Cup Trial Handicap. This season, as an older horse, he landed the Listed Cathedral at Salisbury and the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, but then flopped on a very fast surface in the July Cup. If this is the ground he wants, then he might just hack up here for Tom Marquand and William Haggas.

So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me, Paddy?
