Chris Evans has explained why he’s returning to the role of Steve Rogers in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Evans is back as the superhero, seven years after Avengers: Endgame seemingly brought his version of Captain America’s story to an end.
Speaking onstage at FanExpo in Boston, Evans shared how Marvel had originally wanted to keep the actor as part of the MCU, playing the role of Nomad, the son of Steve Rogers.

The actor explained: “I read a bunch of pitches and they were all fantastic, but none of the stories felt like they were worth compromising the legacy of the character that we worked hard for and you want to make sure it’s worth telling.”
But Evans said he changed his mind once he was pitched Doomsday and Robert Downey Jr had also returned to the fold.
“The Russos love beating up Steve Rogers,” Evans joked. “To them that’s what makes a hero. Not someone who never gets punched, but someone who gets punched so many times but still gets up. So, they keep finding new ways to kick his butt.
“And this one was brutal and a really really good examination into his nature and and his values and so I’ll say it’s it’s probably something you guys haven’t seen yet, but you will.”
Evans went on to add that he feels “very at home,” playing Steve Rogers, further assuring fans that the character wouldn’t be back unless the story was worth it.
“That’s one of the exciting things about coming back for Doomsday that I feel very at home with the role. I feel very not just comfortable, but precious,” he said.

“You know, I care about the arc of all these characters and you know, we wouldn’t be doing it unless there was going to be a really interesting situation to put him in.”
The Russo Brothers previously defended the decision to bring back Rogers, following the release of the first Doomsday trailer.
In a post on Instagram the directors wrote: “The character that changed our lives. The story that brought us all here together. It was always going to come back to this…”
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released on 18 December 2026.
